ALBINO!
(LIVE)

www.albinoband.com

The SF Music Award-winning ALBINO! is a ten-piece Afrobeat ensemble that honors the fiery legacy of Nigerian musical revolutionary Fela Kuti. ALBINO's high-energy grooves and explosive stage show thick with hypnotic percussion, a heavy horn section, African dance, outrageous costumes, and infectious group choreography have firmly established the band as the West Coast's premier Afrobeat act.

According to the SF Weekly, "ALBINO's ass-inspiriting percussive engine comes from a rhythm section of local all-stars; together, they form rhythms based in the West African tradition which holds at its heart the inseparable union of drumming and dance. Atop the band's rhythmic maelstrom ride tightly figured five-part horn lines. The section's 'heavy heavy' bottom end features a snarling dual baritone-sax yawp. This is world music that lives up to the name."

The past decade has seen the emergence of young harmonica-led blues bands. In California, groups that draw their inspiration from the Chicago school but add elements of jump blues and rock 'n' roll into the mix have come up with an exciting new style of West Coast blues. In Oakland, the northern capital of California blues, resides the incredibly powerful harmonica player and vocalist Mark Hummel, leader of The Blues Survivors, who has been a major force in shaping and defining this musical genre.

HopMonk presents...
Lunatic Binge

The inmates are taking over the asylum!!!

The asylum is HOPMONK and, according to doctors within our padded, cement fortress, the lunatics residing inside our most dangerous and disturbed ward are suddenly experiencing delusions of musicality. In fact, they have completely convinced themselves that they are the living embodiment of local music sensations: Baby Seal Club, Brothers Horse and Deluxe Buckets -- all coming together to help Baby Seal Club raise funds for its first CD.

It's an elaborate attention-getting ruse to be sure, but with a looming psychological breakthrough just around the corner, our top clinicians believe it's imperative that we support them in this delusion.

So, please take pity on these lost souls and check into the asylum on July 31 at 8:30pm. Don a bathrobe or some pj's (or your favorite alter-ego's delusional duds) and support our inmates to avoid another bedpan-flying episode like last year. Our patients are nothing without an audience and we promise that the bite guards and restraints will be fully operational this time.

Also, meds will be dispensed by our trained staff who will be positioned throughout the garden to tend to your individual neurosis and psychoses. PLEASE: No Sharp Objects!!

Admission to our artfully appointed inner sanctum is $15 or, decked out for your day pass, only $10.

More details TBA (as the meds kick in).

See you at the binge!

BABY SEAL CLUB

Winners of last year's North Bay Music Awards’ "Best Indie Rock Band," Baby Seal Club is musical alchemy of the most whimsical sort. Influenced by musicians from the 50’s to the ‘noughties, their unique sound is "melodic, harmonic, danceable, take off your pants-able, surf & earth, hip hop pop rock." Their live performances are an art-music spectacle filled with outrageous costumes and general buffoonery.

So Long Cities
Farewell Party
www.myspace.com/solongcities

From a steaming vat of nutrient rich electro phytoplankton, a monster was brewed in the West Sonoma County basement of guitarist Jeff Boldt.  The monster rose with the sound of sheer rock and roll thunder provided by drummer Jason Turner.  As it ascended, destroying all who witnessed its terrible, terrible birth, it slashed the land with its double sided ax of thunder emanating from bassist Kevin Marti's lightning fast hands.  It opened its jaws, spewing the shrieking wails of post apocalyptic lyrics and soul shaking solos masterminded by vocalist/guitarist Micah Burdick.  This beast, known throughout the land as So Long Cities, has rocked Santa Rosa and its surrounding hamlets for four years under various monikers.  Influenced by bands such as Weezer, Bayside, and Jimmy Eat World, their sound has evolved into tightly synchronized, driving rhythms, overlayed with joyful celebrations of a dystopian future.

The Hit System
www.myspace.com/thehitsystem

If Uncle Jessie punched Zack Morris in the face and took Kelly Kapowski on a date - The Hit System is the sound that would make. The Hit System is all about having good time They linger in the genre's of Pop/Punk and Pop/Rock, but aim to be more than just what's been done before. They strive to write music that's fun to listen to and hopefully touches you...or gets you touched.

E Minor and the Dirty Diamonds
www.myspace.com/bonoboos

You might ask; what is a Americana band doing playing with a couple of punk bands? Believe it or not this band is made up of members of local punk bands Sabertooth Zombie and Ceremony. Now they have made the turn in to American Roots Music. E Minor and the Dirty Diamonds are five, home-grown boy’s from right here in Sonoma County, who write and play American roots music. With Eric Enos on vocals and lead guitar, Carlos Wells on rhythm guitar, Justin Davis on vocals and bass, Kevan Ruijters on Drums and Brandon Chester on lead guitar, they are a gritty bled of rock and country blues. They have played in bands together from the time they were 13-14 years old and now all in their 20’s, are becoming a musical force that we will be hearing a lot about. If the guy’s from CCR and Hank Williams and Johnny Cash were all brothers and married girls from Tupelo, Nashville and San Francisco, had kids and put them in a band, you would have E Minor and the Dirty Diamonds.

While exploring his love for the purist forms of House Music, Mark developed his trademark style: Mushroom Jazz; acid jazz infused with the West Coast's jazzy, organic productions along with urban beats.

HopMonk presents a very special co bill with...
CRACKER & CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN

CRACKER
alt / americana / rock

www.crackersoul.com

Cracker, the group that veritably introduced brash irreverence and irony into alt-rock, are back and in top form on their 429 Records debut, Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey.

This rich new trove of sharp-witted songs showcases a bristling, late 70’s – early 80’s power pop punk aesthetic which hits as hard as it did at the band’s formation 17 years ago. Eight albums (one platinum and three gold) and a barrel full of anthemic hit songs later, Cracker endures, using their ability to weave decades of influences into an album that is seamlessly riveting.

In Sunrise…, long-time partners David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, 12-year Cracker drummer Frank Funaro and bassist Sal Maida (since 2006), train a watchful eye on the current socio-musical landscape as they weave an eerie yet strangely soothing story of escapism, apocalypse and renewal. Friends John Doe, Patterson Hood and Adam Duritz (whose mega-band Counting Crows was once produced by Lowery) make spirited guest appearances. The recording was helmed by Athens, GA-based producer/engineer David Barbe, a longtime friend of Lowery who has manned consoles for the likes of Son Volt and the alt-Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers.

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN

www.campervanbeethoven.com

"We didn't want to jump right back in and make that ‘Bad Reunion Record' that most bands make when they try to reform. We were more concerned with getting used to each other and figuring out that we could still make music together, before we made a big deal out of announcing that we were back."
So says David Lowery of the extended gestation period that preceded New Roman Times, Camper Van Beethoven's first album of new material since reuniting after a decade-long hiatus.

These nights are made up of local and traveling musicians from all over the country and even the world.

There are many acts that started at the open mic which are now playing gigs in the beer garden, opening for national touring bands and even headlining their own shows at HopMonk. There is also a weekly feature, selected from a previous open mic, which plays an extended set at prime time. There is even a chance you might be invited to join Bill, to perform live on KSRO, where he is a regular guest on The Drive with Steve Jaxon.

All levels of musicians are welcome! Almost every week there are folks are who performing in front of an audience for the first time, as well as the seasoned professional who is getting ready to go back out on the road and wants to try out new material. It is a testing ground, a meeting place, a community where like minded musicians meet and draw inspiration.

But the open mic is not just for musicians... There have been comedians, beat boxers, jugglers, magicians, a Hula Hooper and even an audience. Yes, an audience. It is a lot of fun, even if you are not a performer, to come down sip on a fresh craft beer and enjoy some locally grown, organic entertainment.

By 2006, Still Time was playing to a regularly sold out house at San Luis Obispo's most popular music venue, Downtown Brewing Co., and began touring across the West Coast.

(el circo, OAK)

shawna's passion for music began in early childhood and throughout while attending the winnipeg music folk festival in manitoba, canada, where she grew up. there, she was exposed to musical genius from all over the planet, which greatly refined her her ear for the subtleties and origins of all types of music. it wasn't until the age of 18 that she took any interest in electronic music, and began pursuing mostly world fusion, "down tempo", and ambient. always searching for that same quality of depth in the electronic realm, she has since collected a vast diversity from hip hop/dub/dubstep/dancehall/world fusion to idm/house/disco/tech/electro. she's been dj-ing "out" since 1999. always eclectic, her varied tastes are brought to the dance floor where she aims to find something for everyone in every set, as well as to attend to as many of the emotional realms from sexy deep to uplifting spirited bliss.
